What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a healing art that recognizes the nervous system as the primary determining factor of a person's health. The human nervous system regulates all life-sustaining functions such as movement, blood circulation, digestion, breathing, and immunity from disease. The nervous system is comprised of the brain and spinal cord, which resides inside the spine. Nerves branch out from the spinal cord, exit from between the bones of the spine (vertebrae), and divide numerous times until every cell in the body is reached. Nerves are like electrical wires that run through our body, and the brain is like a "generator" sending electrical impulses through these nerves to every single cell, telling them what to do. Thanks to this miraculous system, living in good health is possible-our digestive system automatically converts our meals into living tissue; our lungs automatically take in and extract oxygen from air; cuts and wounds automatically heal; and invading germs are automatically attacked and destroyed. Whenever the nervous system is functioning properly, optimum health is possible.

The spine, although designed to protect the spinal cord and its delicate nerves, very often does the opposite. In the course of living, we encounter minor and major trauma to the spine, such as the birthing (delivery) process, slips and falls, sporting accidents, car accidents (whiplash), repetitive/cumulative trauma associated with work (typing, lifting) or a hobby (tennis, crocheting, etc.); poor posture, and obesity. Over time, these events can cause the spine to change shape, or misalign, and irritate the nerves within. This results in body dysfunction and ill-health. Symptoms of spinal misalignment can include pain, numbness, and tingling in the spine or limbs; chronic headaches; frequent colds, and the feeling of fatigue and stress.

Chiropractic is the art and science of detecting spinal misalignments, called subluxations, and correcting them naturally and painlessly, without the use of drugs or surgery. When spinal irritation to the nerves is reduced, nerve function is restored, and the body typically returns to a more optimal state, resulting in improved health.

Activator Spinal Corrections

Imagine thirty to forty years ago, if we told you that dentistry would be painless, that doctors would watch television to perform surgeries, that brain surgery for tumors could be done with a laser, that fetuses could be operated on within the uterus, that knife-less surgery could be performed- you would not have believed us. By the same token, would you believe us if we told you that Chiropractic treatments and reorientation of the nervous system could be done comfortably, while you were relaxing without any turning or sudden movements? Would you believe that newborns as well as the elderly with osteoporosis can be treated safely and gently?

Advances in physics and engineering technologies have been able to uniquely blend with Chiropractic in order to both analyze and treat the human body in such a way that was never before realized. The potential for the human being to end pain and to achieve their peak nervous system function has never been greater. Humans are consistently asking their bodies to perform at higher levels. Now we have the techniques and the technology to match the demand placed on the spine and the nervous system. We now have the capability to fine tune our own energy and enhance every aspect of our lives.

Combing Tradition with Technology

To better understand, let's examine the idea of palpation. When a Chiropractor palpates your spine, they are checking for joint fluidity, motion and or rigidity. Improper motion effecting the nerve function is called a subluxation. The spine should not be too rigid (hypo-mobile). However, instead of utilizing the doctor's judgment as to what areas are hyper-mobile or hypo-mobile, Dr. Wright employs the use the Activator Technique which uses gentle and specific neurologic stress tests to isolate the areas that show the most interference. Dr. Wright is one of only two doctors in the Buffalo area with Advanced Certification in the gentle Activator Methods Technique. He also utilizes an instrument called a Surface EMG, which accurately measures muscle and nerve activity – without painful needles. Therefore, the Doctor can isolate a problem area faster and more accurately than with manual procedures alone.

What is the Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique?

Evolved from nearly 40 years of empirical study and 15 years of clinical research, the Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique (AMCT) uses the latest advances in orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic examinations to seek joint dysfunction in the spinal column and extremities for improved patient care. AMCT uses the Activator Adjusting Instrument to give consistent low-force, high-speed chiropractic adjustments. Over 35,000 doctors have been trained in AMCT and 2,100 doctors are Proficiency Rated, making AMCT the most widely used technique worldwide; a testament to low force patient satisfaction.
